A new mental health plan for US Army veterans includes free ‘suicide counseling’ | World news

Military veterans in the United States will not be able to receive free treatment if they are caught in an “acute suicidal crisis,” as a mental health plan has been announced by the US Department of Veterans. The plan includes free treatment, including inpatient care for up to 30 days and outpatient care for up to 90 days.

Secretary for Veterans Affairs (VA) Denis McDonough said: “Veterans in a suicidal crisis can now get the free, world-class emergency health care they deserve – no matter where they need it, when they need it, or whether they are enrolled in a VA care.”

“This expansion of care will save veterans’ lives, and there is nothing more important than that,” he continued. The care plan can be used by both VA and non-VA care facilities, and even veterans who are not enrolled in the VA system can take advantage of the benefits.

“Former members of the armed forces, including members of the reserve service, who have served more than 100 days under a combat lockout or in support of an emergency operation, either directly or by piloting an unmanned aerial vehicle from a remote location, who have been discharged under Circumstances other than dishonorable “may use suicide care,” the statement said.

Under the new policy, eligible veterans will be paid directly or have their treatment costs reimbursed.
