Actors Ranveer Singh, Disha Patani light up the opening event of the men’s hockey world cup

A grand ceremony was held at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack

The 2023 Men’s Hockey World Cup kicked off in Odisha on Wednesday with a grand opening ceremony at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack with performances by top stars like Ranveer Singh and Disha Patani, singers like Neeti Mohan and even K-Pop band BlackSwan. The evening started with a transcendental dance performance led by the Odissi dance legend, Guru Aruna Mohanty’s troop, to loud cheers from the local crowd. Culturally auspicious, the dance reflected the innate spirit of Odisha and paid tribute to its rich heritage.

The official anthem of the 2023 FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup: “Hockey Hai Dil Mera” was performed live by the composer of the anthem, Pritam along with the 11 singers who sang the original song. The anthem set the stage for the unveiling of the FIH Men’s World Cup trophy as FIH President Tayyab Ikram was joined on stage by Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Pattnaik, Indian Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Anurag Thakur, and President of Hockey India Dilip Tirkey.

“Love the song “Hockey Hai Dil Mera”! Namaskar for the fans in the stadium! Thank you to the Chief Minister of Odisha Shri Naveen Pattnaik and the people of Odisha. I give thanks from the world of hockey and players of hockey from all over. I also want to thank the Central Government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting hockey. I heard everyone saying that Odisha is the land of culture and heritage,” said FIH President Tayyab Ikram.

Union Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Anurag Thakur said, “This is a great time to host the hockey world cup and every Indian is looking forward to watching it! I commend the efforts of Odisha state and Hockey India in putting together what promises to be a fantastic edition of the Hockey World Cup and also to give India one of the best hockey stadiums in the world, in Rourkela.”

Prime Minister Naveen Pattnaik addressed the cheering crowd and said, “Odisha has long been known for its hospitality, and I am sure all visitors will take back a small part of Odisha. I would also like to thank the Prime Minister and the Central Government for all their support.”

A crowd filled the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, Odisha, with 45,000 fans, taking part in the spectacular trophy celebrations that marked the start of the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 Bhubaneswar-Rourkela. Odisha will host the tournament in both cities and a showpiece of the tournament is a brand new Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela.

Speaking to NDTV, Vineel Krishna, Sports and Youth Services Secretary, Govt of Odisha said, “The most important thing about this stadium is that it is not only big and beautiful. It is also at the heart of hockey. This hockey stadium is built in a area where several hockey greats were produced. It is in a city like Rourkela. So it will be a source of inspiration for thousands of hockey players in the coming decades.’

Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner SK Priyadarshi told NDTV: “You know, we have experience with this. We organized this in 2018 and we are organizing it again in 2022. What is a major challenge for us is that it tournament will start on the 13th in Rourkela and Bhubaneswar and from the arrival of the teams we have considered security, guidance for practice sessions and also PSOs for them it is a challenge for the police but we are prepared for this and we are prepared for it to make sure everyone enjoys the games.”

The night of song and dance opened the World Cup and paved the way for an exciting edition of the FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup, which kicks off on January 13, 2023, with the first two games of the day in Bhubaneswar, followed by two more games in the evening, at the brand new Birsa Munda International Hockey stadium in Rourkela.
