In 2022, Bollywood emerged from the Covid-19 crisis and tried to bounce back with movies like Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Drishyam 2, Brahmastra, The Kashmir Files turn out to be profitable among other things. Even as the Boycott Bollywood brigade marched on social media, including pan-Indian projects KGF 2, RRR, and Kantara roared at the cash register. Now the big question is, will Bollywood be able to bounce back and emerge even stronger in 2023? While the year has an impressive lineup with movies like Selfiee, Shehzada, Bholaa, Pathaan, Dunki, Sam Bahadur, Fighterand Animal already making noise for all the right reasons, it will be interesting to see how they do at the box office.
Speaking of what may or may not work, members of the fraternity feel that 2023 will be mostly about Shah Rukh Khan with his three projects: Pathan, Jawan and Dunki lined up for release.
Trading expert Atul Mohan states: “All eyes will be on SRK. Pathan becomes a complete package thanks to Siddharth Anand and rumored cameo appearances from Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff have hyped the audience for good. Jawan is expected to bring in money at the box office given director Atlee’s record in the south. And that of Rajkumar Hirani Dunki will also be the highlight of the year.”
Producer Vishal Rana agrees: “It should come as no surprise that SRK is in the spotlight all year round. This is probably one of the rare times a superstar releases so many major movies back-to-back in the span of a few months.
Among the Khans, Salman Khan has too Tiger 3 and Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan coming out back-to-back and that is expected to bring in moolah at the box office this year.
Looking back, trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, “2022 has taught us never to pin our hopes on a project. Last year there were many shocks and surprises. We will also see that in 2023. There are many interesting movies on the agenda. We’ll have to see which one succeeds, but 2023 is full of movies with very interesting stars and equally interesting subjects.”
After a long time, in 2023 almost every mainstream actor will have multiple releases. From Akshay Kumar, Ranbir Kapoor to Kartik Aaryan and Sidharth Malhotra, each actor has something new to offer.
“Kartik Aaryan and Ranbir Kapoor are at that stage in their careers where they are making the films they love. Kartik will definitely be in the top 3 actors in terms of popularity this year,” adds Mohan.
As for Ranbir, considering he had a mixed 2022 Shamshera be a flop and Brahmastra turns out to be quite a hit, 2023 will be pivotal with Animal and Luv Ranjan’s Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar. “You can expect both films to hopefully cross the 100 crore apiece mark at the box office,” hopes Adarsh.
Another actor on whom the industry is placing all its bets is Akshay Kumar. “Of selfie and OMG 2!, audiences can expect huge hits. Both are commercial movies and will see Akshay in an entertaining way, something people like to see him in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan 2 is expected to cause a stir this year as well,” says director Milap Zaveri.
He further adds that 2023 will be about masala entertainers. Kartik Aryans Shezada and that of Ajay Devgn Bholaa will be a massive dhamaka and will hopefully set the box office on fire. Dan, Prabhas and Kriti Sanon’s Adipurush definitely going to be one of the biggest highlights of 2023. Despite the flak in the movie, the movie will open gigantic,” says Zaveri.
Trading expert Komal Nahta names Ajay Devgn and claims that the actor will follow up the success of Drishyam 2 with maid and Bholaa in 2023. He adds: “In addition to the big budget releases, Fukry 3 is also expected to draw audiences to theaters. As it is the third film in the franchise, it will be bigger and more ambitious.”
