Rashmika Mandana is set for a fruitful year in cinema. The actor stars in four films in three different languages, the first of which is her first direct OTT release: Mission Majnu. Sidharth Malhotra’s protagonist sees Rashmika playing a visually impaired character for the first time in her life. In a conversation with Hindustan Times, the actor talks about how she prepared for the role and how great the challenge was for her. Talking about why she took on the challenge, Rashmika says, “As an actor, I’ve never done that. Again, this is kind of a retro movie, so I had to wear those costumes and at the same time I had to get some training in the visual aspect. I wondered how I was going to pull this off because it was so new to me.”
But the process of acting without using her eyes was difficult, Rashmika recalls. “I am this person who has to speak while looking into his eyes. I can’t look at anyone else during a conversation. But in the whole movie I can’t watch Tariq (Sidharth’s character). This is so hard to do, I thought. I don’t come from a background of studying acting. I have to live those moments to feel it. But this has been a challenge,” she shares.
And before being in front of the camera, Rashmika had to undergo special training to understand the body language and consciousness of people with visual impairments. She recalls, “I took tax workshops for a few weeks. I had such a terrible headache by the end of it. They blindfolded you and threw tennis balls at you so you had to feel where it came from. That was really painful and debilitating.”
Mission Majnu is a spy thriller directed by Shantanu Bagchi. The film also stars Parmeet Sethi, Kumud Mishra, Rajit Kapur, Arjan Bajwa and Sharib Hashmi. It will be released on Netflix on January 20, 2023. Rashmika also has Animal, Varisu, and Pushpa: The Rise in the pipeline, all set to release in 2023.
